During the Dutch war of independence, also known as the Eighty Years War (1568–1648), a large number of British mercenaries joined the Dutch forces to fight against Spain. While there, these mercenaries learned many Dutch words and returned to England with a new vocabulary, expanding the English lexicon with such words as smuggle, beleaguer, plunder, knapsack, freight, schooner, etc. and a large number of vulgar words which we won’t get into here. Henry Hexham was an English army captain, translator and military author who spent decades living in Holland during the war. Hexham originally published the English-Dutch section in 1647 and the Dutch-English section in 1648. These were reprinted in 1660 and 1658 respectively (offered here). And reprinted again in 1675, 1672, and 1678 respectively. This dictionary is the first book of its kind with some 31,000 entries, including names of all kinds of beasts, hawking and hunting, fishing, herbs, mathematics, weights and measures. USTC1844502 locates only 6 copies, none in the United States. ESTCR357, Wing H1650, H1653A, Alston XIII.88, XIII.91.…
