Ready to Understand Building Systems Without Getting Lost in Engineering Jargon?
A building may look complete on the outside, but its real performance depends on the systems hidden behind walls, above ceilings, inside shafts, and within equipment rooms. THE CONSTRUCTION MANAGER’S BUILDING SYSTEMS HANDBOOK gives construction managers, project engineers, superintendents, coordinators, students, and emerging professionals a practical way to understand those systems—and manage them with confidence.Have you ever looked at an MEP drawing and wondered how all the systems are supposed to fit together? Do HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, controls, and commissioning sometimes feel like separate technical worlds? Would you feel more confident on site if you could recognize problems earlier, ask better questions, and coordinate trades before costly rework begins?
This book was written to close that gap.
Rather than turning you into a mechanical or electrical designer, it teaches you the building-systems knowledge a construction professional actually needs: how systems work, how they interact, what must be coordinated, where failures commonly occur, and what to verify before installation, testing, commissioning, and turnover.
Inside, you will discover how to:
- Read and interpret multidisciplinary MEP drawings, specifications, schedules, details, and coordination documents.
- Understand HVAC fundamentals, thermal comfort, building loads, refrigeration, ventilation, air distribution, hydronic systems, and central plants.
- Follow electrical power from the utility source through transformers, switchgear, panelboards, emergency systems, grounding, and building loads.
- Understand domestic water, sanitary drainage, venting, stormwater, specialty plumbing, and equipment connections.
- Coordinate fire-protection, fire-alarm, and life-safety systems with the rest of the building.
- Understand building automation, sensors, controllers, actuators, BAS networks, alarms, trends, and smart-building integration.
- Manage BIM coordination, clash detection, sleeves, openings, shafts, risers, equipment rooms, access zones, and replacement paths.
- Improve installation planning, sequencing, quality control, testing, TAB, commissioning, troubleshooting, closeout, and owner turnover.
- Use practical worked examples, field checklists, coordination workflows, review tools, and practice problems to reinforce understanding.
- Recognize maintainability, energy-performance, lifecycle, resilience, and future-building-system considerations before they become expensive problems.
The book shows you how to recognize these risks early.
Whether you are preparing for a career in construction management, already working on complex projects, moving into MEP coordination, supervising subcontractors, or simply trying to become more technically capable on site, this handbook can become a reference you return to throughout a project.
It also makes a valuable professional gift for construction-management students, graduate engineers, project engineers, site supervisors, junior construction managers, BIM coordinators, MEP professionals, and anyone who wants building systems explained in a clear and practical way.
