Add to basketÉditions Pierre Lafitte. Paris. 1917. De 18x12 cm. Com [iv], 296, [iv] págs. Brochado. [iv], 296, [iv] pp. Paperback. Copy with small paper faults on the spine and edges of the boards, title and author handwritten in ink on the spine. Occasional damp stains. First volume edition of the novel, published in serialised form in the magazine 'Le Matin' in 1916. Confitou: He"s eight years old and loves jam (Confiture). that"s why they call him Confitou. He is the son of Dr Raucoux-Desmares, a respected doctor in a small town in the north of France, and a German woman from Dresden. Confitou, who received a French and German education, was discreet and respectful of his parents" culture. However, in 1916, France is in conflict with Germany. And when German soldiers - including his uncles - arrive in the village, the situation changes. He has to choose sides. He even takes up arms to betray his mum and uncle, a German officer, and help liberate his village. Popular literature as a means of propaganda. In this terrible but fascinating war novel, serialised in Le Matin in 1916, Gaston Leroux fights the Germans with his pen, and the novel - like its vocabulary - must be seen in the context of the time: the aim was to portray the enemy in the worst possible way. Gaston Leroux used his talent as a crime writer to unmask the German atrocities committed in Northern France. But his approach is neither simplistic nor merely accusatory. The characters of his three protagonists are full of nuances. Tortured, torn between love and country, admiration and horror, they let themsel.
