COMPREHENSIVE CLINICAL PSYCHIATRY is a comprehensive, evidence-based reference designed to provide a modern understanding of psychiatry through the integration of neuroscience, psychiatric diagnosis, clinical assessment, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and patient-centered mental healthcare.
The book presents psychiatry as a dynamic medical discipline that connects brain function, human behavior, psychological processes, social influences, and biological mechanisms. Beginning with the historical and conceptual foundations of psychiatry, the text progresses through contemporary diagnostic frameworks, including the principles underlying the DSM-5-TR classification system, and provides a structured approach to evaluating and treating mental disorders.
Key topics include:- Foundations of psychiatry, including history, philosophy, ethics, human rights, and the biopsychosocial model of mental illness
- Neuroscience of psychiatric disorders, including neuroanatomy, neurotransmitters, neuroendocrinology, neuroimaging, neuroplasticity, and gene–environment interactions
- Psychiatric assessment, including clinical interviewing, psychiatric history, mental status examination, rating scales, and case formulation
- Psychopathology and the clinical understanding of disturbances in mood, thought, perception, cognition, memory, and behavior
- Schizophrenia spectrum and psychotic disorders, including diagnosis, neurobiology, antipsychotic treatment, and psychosocial rehabilitation
- Depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, mood regulation, pharmacotherapy, and integrated treatment approaches
- Anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma-related disorders, and evidence-based therapies
- Neurodevelopmental disorders, including ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and learning disorders
- Personality disorders, diagnostic models, therapeutic approaches, and evidence-based interventions
- Substance use disorders, addiction neurobiology, withdrawal management, harm reduction, and recovery strategies
- Eating disorders, body image disturbances, medical complications, and multidisciplinary treatment
- Sleep-wake disorders, circadian rhythm disorders, insomnia, and behavioral and pharmacologic therapies
- Somatic symptom disorders, psychosomatic medicine, and integrated mind–body approaches
- Consultation-liaison psychiatry in medically ill patients, including delirium, chronic disease, oncology, cardiac, renal, and transplant psychiatry
- Neurocognitive disorders, dementia, Alzheimer disease, cognitive assessment, and management strategies
- Child and adolescent psychiatry, developmental disorders, family-based interventions, and pediatric psychopharmacology
- Geriatric psychiatry, aging-related mental health conditions, dementia care, polypharmacy, and ethical considerations
- Psychopharmacology, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, hypnotics, pharmacokinetics, and advanced therapies
