Discover the extraordinary world of one of South America’s most distinctive and fascinating wild canids.
THE COMPLETE MANED WOLF HANDBOOK: WILDLIFE ESSENTIALS is a comprehensive and educational guide to the biology, behavior, ecology, natural history, and conservation of the remarkable maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus).
With its exceptionally long legs, reddish-orange coat, towering ears, dark mane, and foxlike appearance, the maned wolf is unlike any other living canid. Yet behind its striking appearance lies an equally fascinating lifestyle shaped by millions of years of evolution across the grasslands, savannas, wetlands, and open landscapes of South America.
This handbook takes readers beyond basic species facts to explore how maned wolves live, communicate, hunt, forage, reproduce, raise their young, establish territories, interact with their environment, and survive in increasingly human-modified landscapes.
Inside this comprehensive wildlife guide, you will discover:
• Maned wolf taxonomy, evolution, anatomy, and unique physical adaptations
• Geographic distribution and the natural habitats that support wild populations
• Omnivorous feeding ecology, including fruits, insects, and animal prey
• Hunting techniques, foraging strategies, and seasonal food selection
• Daily activity patterns, movement, territories, and extensive home ranges
• Intelligence, learning abilities, environmental awareness, and problem-solving behavior
• Vocal communication, body language, scent marking, and the famous roar-bark
• Social structure, pair relationships, territorial behavior, and individual interactions
• Courtship, mating, pregnancy, birth, and reproductive biology
• Pup development, parental care, growth, learning, and independence
• Health concerns, parasites, diseases, injuries, and natural causes of mortality
• Relationships with predators, competitors, prey species, and other wildlife
• The important role maned wolves play as seed dispersers
• Human–wildlife conflict and practical approaches to peaceful coexistence
• Management, nutrition, enrichment, breeding, and welfare in conservation facilities
• Habitat loss, fragmentation, road collisions, domestic dogs, and other modern threats
• Wildlife corridors, population monitoring, genetic research, and conservation management
• Climate change, sustainable land use, habitat restoration, and the future of the species
Written in a clear and accessible style, THE COMPLETE MANED WOLF HANDBOOK: WILDLIFE ESSENTIALS combines biological knowledge with practical conservation understanding, making complex wildlife concepts approachable for a wide range of readers.
Whether you are a wildlife enthusiast, student, naturalist, conservation supporter, animal lover, educator, researcher, zoo professional, or simply fascinated by unusual species, this handbook provides an engaging journey into the life of an animal that is neither a true wolf nor a fox, but a remarkable evolutionary specialist in its own right.
From its towering legs and extraordinary hearing to its fruit-rich diet and important role in seed dispersal, every aspect of the maned wolf demonstrates the fascinating relationship between anatomy, behavior, and environment.
Explore its world. Understand its biology. Discover its ecological importance. And learn why protecting the maned wolf also means protecting some of South America’s most valuable open ecosystems.
Begin your journey into the remarkable world of the maned wolf today.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
