Add to basketSmall 4to. (7-5/8" x 5-3/4") . 14 preliminary leaves, an inserted leaf (engraved: "Alphabetum Anglo-Saxonicum") -- 221 ff. ("Das Rehte lehenbuch das zu Nuerenberg wwart gemaht" -- this section is arranged with the medieval German text on the left-hand side, versos, facing Schilter's Latin translation, rectos) -- Following this bilingual text is a 5-1/2 pp. Index (printed in double-columns, with headings in both old German and Latin) ; Next -- is a text: "Jus Feudale Saxonicum. Ab Epkowe de Repkaw." 56 pp. Next follows Johann Schilter's commentary (in Latin) on German Feudal Law -- 658 pp. (This long section also includes a supplement, and several short dissertations on specific related subjects) -- The volume concludes with an unpaginated "Index Rerum et Verborum" [20] pp. The binding is contemporary -- half tan sheep over sprinkled paper-covered boards, raised bands, dark red spine label lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, edges stained red. There is an excellent engraved pictorial bookplate mounted to the front paste-down -- with an identification in old ink MSS of Georgius Albertus Steinheil. And a corroborating ink owner's inscription on the title page. There is some minor rubbing to the spine, and to the corners -- but generally this in excellent condition. The author is known for a compilation of documents of Feudal German history and literature -- "Thesaurus Antiquitatum Teutonicarum." published in Ulm in 1727-8 (see Brunet V: 202) -- which has shown up a couple of times at auction in the last 25 years -- but this earlier work strictly on Feudal and Medieval law appears to be quite rare. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings.
