The fields of gastroenterology and hepatology have undergone remarkable transformation with advances in diagnostic technology, endoscopy, molecular medicine, microbiome research, precision therapies, and multidisciplinary patient care. From common digestive disorders to complex liver diseases and gastrointestinal malignancies, clinicians require a comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms, diagnostic approaches, and evidence-based management strategies.
The Clinical Practice of Gastroenterology and Hepatology provides a complete and clinically focused reference covering the principles, diagnosis, treatment, and future directions of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary medicine.
Designed for gastroenterologists, hepatologists, internal medicine physicians, fellows, residents, medical students, researchers, and healthcare professionals, this textbook integrates fundamental physiology with modern clinical practice to support accurate diagnosis, effective treatment decisions, and comprehensive patient care.
Inside this comprehensive clinical reference, readers will explore:
Foundations of gastroenterology and hepatology — gastrointestinal anatomy, digestive physiology, clinical evaluation, disease epidemiology, and approaches to the patient with GI and liver disorders
Modern diagnostic techniques — laboratory evaluation, endoscopy, imaging modalities, liver biopsy, histopathology, functional testing, and advanced diagnostic tools
Esophageal and gastric disorders — gastroesophageal reflux disease, motility disorders, Barrett esophagus, Helicobacter pylori infection, gastritis, and peptic ulcer disease
Functional gastrointestinal disorders and motility diseases — disorders of gut-brain interaction, irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, and related conditions
Small bowel disease and inflammatory bowel disease — celiac disease, malabsorption syndromes, Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, extraintestinal manifestations, and modern therapeutic approaches
Colorectal disorders and gastrointestinal emergencies — colorectal cancer screening, polyps, diverticular disease, anorectal disorders, gastrointestinal bleeding, and intestinal vascular disorders
Pancreatic and biliary disorders — acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic tumors, gallstone disease, cholangitis, ERCP management, and biliary malignancies
Comprehensive hepatology — viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, drug-induced liver injury, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), autoimmune liver disease, genetic disorders, cirrhosis, and portal hypertension
Advanced liver care — acute liver failure, liver transplantation, immunosuppression, hepatocellular carcinoma surveillance, and long-term transplant management
Nutrition and special populations — nutritional support, pregnancy-related GI and liver disease, pediatric-to-adult transition, and systemic disease manifestations
Future directions in digestive medicine — microbiome science, artificial intelligence, genomics, precision medicine, regenerative therapies, and emerging clinical innovations
With a balanced integration of pathophysiology, clinical reasoning, diagnostic methods, therapeutic strategies, and emerging technologies, this textbook provides a practical and comprehensive framework for understanding modern gastrointestinal and liver medicine.
Whether used for medical education, residency and fellowship training, clinical practice, or professional reference, The Clinical Practice of Gastroenterology and Hepatology serves as an essential resource for healthcare professionals seeking to improve diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes in patients with digestive and hepatobiliary diseases.
