Understand Orofacial Function Beyond Isolated Exercises—and Learn How to Approach Myofunctional Therapy with Clinical Confidence
Breathing, tongue posture, lip closure, chewing, swallowing, speech-related movement, sleep, and dentofacial stability are closely connected. Yet these concerns are often assessed separately or treated with standardized exercises that fail to address why the functional pattern developed in the first place.
An open-mouth posture may reflect airway obstruction, reduced lip competence, craniofacial structure, neurological limitation, discomfort, or learned behavior. A swallowing pattern may be developmental, compensatory, structurally influenced, or associated with a condition requiring specialist evaluation. Without careful assessment and clinical reasoning, treatment can become ineffective, unnecessarily burdensome, or inappropriate.
Clinical Myofunctional Therapy Textbook provides a comprehensive, evidence-informed guide to understanding, assessing, and managing orofacial function across the lifespan.
Moving beyond one-size-fits-all exercise programs, this textbook explains how anatomy, physiology, development, sensory-motor control, behavior, airway health, dentition, and medical conditions influence functional performance. It guides readers through the complete clinical process—from the first patient interview to assessment, formulation, treatment planning, therapeutic progression, outcome measurement, referral, and long-term integration.
Inside this book, readers will discover:
- Functional anatomy and physiology of the tongue, lips, jaws, palate, dentition, pharynx, and upper airway
- Development of orofacial function from infancy through older adulthood
- Patient-centred history taking and structured clinical examination
- Assessment of breathing, airway symptoms, sleep-related concerns, mastication, swallowing, speech-related movement, and oral habits
- Motor-learning principles, behavior change, therapeutic dosage, feedback, and functional generalization
- Individualized approaches to oral rest posture, lip competence, tongue mobility, coordination, chewing, and swallowing
- Clinical considerations for pediatric, adult, older, neurological, craniofacial, dental, orthodontic, surgical, and complex presentations
- Red flags, contraindications, patient-safety principles, consent, documentation, and referral pathways
- Research appraisal, emerging technologies, telepractice, and interprofessional collaboration
What makes this book especially valuable is its emphasis on responsible clinical judgment. Readers learn to distinguish observation from diagnosis, normal variation from dysfunction, association from causation, and isolated exercise performance from meaningful functional improvement. The text also explains when therapy is appropriate, when treatment should be modified or discontinued, and when medical, dental, sleep, speech-language, swallowing, neurological, or surgical evaluation should take priority.
Designed for myofunctional therapists, speech-language professionals, dentists, orthodontic professionals, dental hygienists, nurses, rehabilitation practitioners, educators, students, and other healthcare professionals, this textbook offers the knowledge and practical framework needed to deliver safer, more individualized, patient-centred care.
Build a deeper understanding of orofacial function, strengthen your clinical reasoning, and move beyond isolated exercises toward thoughtful, evidence-informed myofunctional practice.
