Add to basketCosmo is a young boy whose life has been changed forever, after falling out of the tree he loved to climb. Now, Cosmo is disabled and uses a wheelchair. Now, Cosmo wants to have a conversation with the tree.
In this outstanding debut collection for children, Stephen Lightbown draws on his own personal experiences as a wheelchair user, while creating a unique and utterly engaging character in Cosmo. Written in Cosmo’s voice and peppered with contributions from the boy’s family, these poems take the reader on a journey of challenges, questions, hurts, explorations and triumphs. Cosmo is endlessly open and curious, and his observations and reflections are at once perceptive, raw, hilarious, confronting and enchanting.
How can Cosmo come to terms with, and adapt to, this seismic change in his life? Is his life as he knew it gone? Could there be new possibilities ahead, and also new abilities that Cosmo doesn't yet know he possesses? And will the tree ever reply to his number one question: why?
Stephen Lightbown lives in Bristol and writes extensively but not exclusively about life as a wheelchair user. Stephen has written poetry for adults and is passionate about wanting to see authentic voices writing about disability across all ages. This is his first collection of poetry for children. He is currently working with Troika on several ideas for picture book stories and middle grade fiction.
Stephen was born in Blackburn, Lancashire. In 1996, aged 16, he experienced a life changing accident whilst sledging in the snow and is now paralysed from below the waist.
He has spoken at events and festivals across the UK and his poems have also been widely anthologised. In August 2021 Stephen performed his first one man show ‘A Life With PIP’ having been commissioned by Coventry based theatre company Theatre Absolute. The show was about Stephen’s experiences of applying for the PIP benefit.
He can be found on most social media channels via @spokeandpencil and is available to present talks and workshops on a range of issues including accessibility and writing about disability poetry.

Shih-Yu Lin was born in Taipei in Taiwan but grew up in a village where he was surrounded by mountains and would often see snow covered peaks with the beautiful sun shining on them, scenes that have remained deep in his mind. His first book for Troika was An Ordinary Story and his most recent book for Troika was the acclaimed Things That Should be in a Poem by Coral Rumble.
