THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION-FIRST ISSUE: . This RAREST OF ALL copies will have "R. WORTHINGTON" in all capital letters at the bottom of the spine. This will be 2 cm. from the bottom edge and has a gold rule line under publisher's name. This is unique to this edition only. The lettering is .5 mm. tall. . EDITION PUBLISHER'S NAME POINTS: . "Dealers and collectors generally have given preference to copies on which 'R. WORTHINGTON' is stamped in large cap[s on the sine, the other variations of the stamping being R. Worthington in small caps, and in caps and lower case." . He continues to also point out the copy of this title that went to auction of the Merele Johnson collection of Hearn books. which was a copy from Hearn's personal collection also had 'R. WORTHINGTON' at the bottom of the spine. Per the American Art Assn. auction catalogue of January 20, 1914, see item #295 for more details. Johnson called this edition the "Genuine First Edition of the Translator s' First Work of High Association." . Johnson cites the three variants of publisher's name on the spine: a. All caps b. Copy 1 is the VERY RARE FIRST EDITION-FIRST ISSUE: The book is bound in full red cloth with gold printed titles on the spine, and of course it has "R. WORTHINGTON" in gold capital letters at the bottom of the spine. . It is contained in the half red Morocco leather over red cloth custom Solander slip case, with a matching red cloth covered board, five part folding case with brown velvet cloth lining. This is a superb presentation. . CONDITION:: The books is in excellent condition, for a book nearly 135 years old. The binding is fresh, clean and has very bright gold stamping. The covers have a blind-stamped line border & top edge gilt. . The barely are signs of wear on the corners and at the top of spine one tiny closed tear at the very top. The contents are solid, clean and tight, with no marks or issues. . This copy is about as good as it can get, far and above in superior collector's condition. The best copy we have had in the last 55 years. . Please see illus01.jpg photo posted to our website. Note the copy to the right side is this exact item. This shows "R. WORTHINGTON" in large font, in all capital letters. . * Copy 2 is very similar to the above. The differences are: the head and tail of the spine has 2-3 small closed tears, and a tiny bit of very minor and minimal darkening hints to the spine. The signatures are firm and solid, no corner bumps, a very nice and far above the average example. The name "R. WORTHINGTON" is all in SMALL capital letters. .
