Shanghai 1910, Guangyi Bookstore. Stiff grey stitched wrs., binding rubbed at extremeties, contents sound, 5 parts bound together, each with title page, folding map, English words at the top of each page with Chinese translation. * RARE * . *** **** *** . . AN UNUSUAL & PRACTICAL TEXTS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE . . . WITH MORAL AND ETHICAL TEACHINGS & LESSONS . * Practical for beginners, Qionglin for young learners . The author: Cheng Dengji. The author of "Youxue Qionglin" is the Ming Dynasty scholar Cheng Dengji (Zi Yunsheng), a native of Xichang. The original title of his book was "Youxue Xuzhi", which was later supplemented by Zou Shengmai in the Qing Dynasty and renamed "Youxue Qionglin" or "Youxue Story Qionglin". . *** This work was for students. It has a general history of the Emperors of China, as well as other historical writings on various subjects, including astronomy. . * What separates this from others of the period, is that it has an extensive vocabulary of English words at the top as part of the printed work, likely an after-thought due to the placement in the upper margin. Each word group is organized by subject such as kinship relative names, political positions, thanking, food, weapons, expressions, animals, sea animals, birds, Chinese festivals, dates, time, days of the weeks, months, weather, astronomy and so on. Each English word has the Chinese written below it. . * The collation of the parts are: from part 1 to 5: 11+18+27+24+24 pages, each page is double folded then stitched on the spine side in traditional Chinese fashion. . * The work is bound in what appears to be an old protective stiff paper, with brush writing on the front cover showing the name of the owner and a date. This appears to be an afterthought, added later by the previous owner. The back cover appears to be an old cover from a "Deutz Working Instructions for the Vertical Deutz Diesel Engine Type A 220/224" and not associated with the contents of the book. Some 6.5 cm. of the spine part of the covers is gone, else mostly there, corners rubbed. The actual Chinese text is printed on very thin paper. . * The folding map is 22 x 20 cm, and shows greater China from Korea, Japan, Formosa to the tip of Hainan, westward to Central Asia, Mongolia to the north. Large rivers noted, named, as are the provinces using old names, and of course the Great Wall is shown. . * The following is a summary of key information: The content covers 33 categories of knowledge such as astronomy, geography, and laws and regulations. It is known as the "encyclopedia of ancient China" and has a profound impact on children's enlightenment education. . *** This book also has English language lessons at the top margi of each page has at least 5 English words or short sentences of English words and the Chinese meaning, written in script. Below that is a full page of Chinese [Hanzi] text. There is a 2 page folding map of and 12 pages of illustrations from the front onward. The first title page is printed in black ink, followed bY 4 other red ink pictorial title pages. . *** PAGINATION: the book has 5 sections, all bound in a single stitched volume, each part contains a title page, preface/introduction with following pagination: parts: 1: 18p. 2: 27p. 3. 24p. 4. 24p. . . Moral & ethical lessons are also explained and taught to the readers. . *** CONDITION: The book was rebound using an old German diesel engine manual stiff covers, which do not relate to the text. The book is stitch bound. Each page is double-folded Chinese style and bound from the left edge and opens from the right side, as usual. . The paper is a bit 'toned' as can be expected for a book of its age. The paper is of a good quality and is intact without tears or damage There is a bit of blue ink stain on the lower edge of the first part of the book in the margin only, text not affected. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** A rather fascinating and unusual work. With excellent period illustrations and t.…
