Toronto: William Briggs, 1901. First Canadian edition. Small 8vo. 158pp. Grey cloth, title in black and red blind stamping. 10 plates and many illustrations in text. Includes frontispiece portrait of the author. Wear to the top of the spine. Bookplate of the United Church of Canada Ryerson Press Book Collection on front paste down. Very good condition. Beals, a well-known United Church missionary from Nova Scotia, served for nine years in Wuhan, China, before being forced to leave there.
