MANUSCRIPT. Oblong. 13.75 x 7 inches. Single sheet manuscript on vellum with traces of early folds. Small section cut from lower left corner not affecting text and no seals present. Two sets of double holes punched above the text. Signature now faded but still legible. The Kent Militia was the home defence force which had been called out in June 1667 when the Dutch attacked the Medway but by 1668, the threat of French invasion was greater. Charles Stuart, 6th Duke of Richmond and 3rd Duke of Lennox (1639-72) of Cobham House, Kent, was a courtier of Charles II, who held various ambassador posts. Already Lord Lieutenant of Dorset hew was appointed to the same office in Kent in May 1668, the same month that he signed this commission. Colonel Sir Thomas Payton, Bt. (or Peyton) of Knowlton, Kent was a royalist officer who served as one of the two Kent MPs in the first Restoration Parliament from 1661, unto 1679.
