all unpaginated, num.engr.ills, occ. acceptably water-coloured by, presumably, original owner; all orig.t.p.'s present except for second numbers in last two vols where they have been excised (i.e. number 10,12); a number have orig.owner's ink inscrip.top t.p.: 'Alicia Henrietta Kelly, Hillsborough', one 'From Papa to Alicia' (this would have provided date but edge has been cropped leaving only 'Aug.18', one has excision of name across top. Vol.1 only has a sm. 1965-dated sig.top fr.fly. Title pages & some contents pages browned. All undated but internal evidence, such as inscrip.from Papa and change to sig. with Henrietta reduced to H. (and very fact that t.p.s are individually inscribed) suggests that this is a private binding of the first eds. issued through 1852-1854. The covers, with gilt-dec.panelled spines, all remain attractive but have surface rubbing to spines & corners as well, slightly to marbled boards, sm.split top fr.sp. last vol., all gilt-lettered red labels present. Topics covered by the various tracts ranged across the spectrum from lighthouses to Dante and Persian Poetry to the Moon. A culturally important popular educational project by the Chambers brothers.
