Item description from seller

A clever and highly original children's picture book by William Steig built entirely around phonetic puzzles and rebus-style visual wordplay. Each page combines simple drawings with abbreviated letters that the reader must sound out to reveal the hidden sentence (for example, 'CDB!' reads as 'See the bee!'). The book invites participation and decoding, making it both a humorous story and an engaging literacy game. Steig's spare black-line drawings and playful typography create a distinctive mid-century design that has remained popular with educators and collectors of classic children's literature. This edition was issued by Windmill Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, and bound in yellow pictorial cloth with Steig's illustration printed directly on the front board. The copyright page reads Copyright © 1968 by William Steig and includes later identifiers such as ISBN numbers and a printer's number line reading 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20. The presence of ISBNs and this number line indicates a later reprint edition. Condition: Book Very Good+ to Near Fine. Yellow cloth boards remain bright with light handling wear and a small bump with minor fraying at the upper spine corner. Binding is tight and square. Interior pages are clean and bright with no writing, markings, or tears observed. A well-preserved copy overall, with particularly attractive boards and crisp interior illustrations. William Steig (1907-2003) was an American cartoonist, illustrator, and children's author best known for his long career at The New Yorker. Later in life he became one of the most celebrated creators of children's books, producing classics such as Sylvester and the Magic Pebble (Caldecott Medal winner), Doctor De Soto, and Shrek! - the latter inspiring the DreamWorks film franchise.…
