Captain Lewis Edward "Lew" Nolan was appointed as a regimental riding master in Madras in 1844. He had firm and sometimes controversial ideas about how cavalry should be used on the battlefield. In 1853, his book, 'Cavalry: Its History and Tactics', was published; then, with the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1854, Nolan was appointed as ADC to Brigadier-General Airey and was sent to Turkey to buy mounts. In July 1854 he landed in the Crimea at Varna with 300 horses. Nolan will forever be associated with his role in the Charge of the Light Brigade on 25 October 1854. Some sources blame Nolan for the misinterpretation of Lord Raglan¿s commands. He was the galloper who carried Airey¿s order to Lord Lucan and Lord Cardigan and was subsequently killed in action during the charge. He was 36 years old. Lord Lucan detested Nolan and, on hearing that Nolan was dead, commented: "He met his deserts, a dog's death - and like a dog let him be buried in a ditch". Seller Inventory # 000055

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the often-overlooked yet crucial role of cavalry in warfare. Spanning centuries of military history, the author explores pivotal cavalry engagements from antiquity to the mid-19th century, highlighting the evolution of tactics and the impact of legendary commanders like Alexander the Great, Hannibal, and Frederick the Great. The narrative underscores the dynamic nature of cavalry warfare, contrasting the heavy, armor-clad horsemen of earlier eras with the rise of lighter, more agile cavalry forces. The author examines the strengths and weaknesses of different cavalry types and delves into the intricacies of organization, equipment, and training, emphasizing the importance of horsemanship and tactical proficiency. Drawing upon historical examples and personal experience, the author advocates for a streamlined approach to cavalry tactics, arguing that a focus on fundamental maneuvers and adaptability is key to success on the battlefield. This book offers valuable insights into the art of cavalry warfare, shedding light on its enduring significance and the timeless principles that continue to shape military strategy. By understanding the lessons of the past, we gain a deeper appreciation for the cavalry's pivotal role in shaping the course of history.
