2 vol. 8vo of : I. 25 framed sketches ; II. 16 framed sketches. Contemp. cardboard with craft reinforcement on the back, handwritten titling label on one of them. Set of two abundantly illustrated notebooks by R. Foucault, a second year art history student, constituting an interesting example of comparative art as taught in France at the end of the 19th century. The first notebook contains about twenty drawings, mostly in color and captioned, representing monuments and ornaments from different periods: Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Modern Times. Foucault focuses on Byzantine, Greek, Roman, Ogival, Egyptian, Arabic, Chinese, Hindu and Japanese art. He drew sketches of the Sphinx, a campaniform capital, the Parthenon, ornaments of the Ionic and Corinthian order, but also the Arch of Titus, Moorish capitals, a church portal in Arles, the gallery of a cloister, cathedrals. The second notebook is the continuation of the first one and contains about fifteen sketches, most of them in color and with captions. Foucault draws sketches of ogival art, notably details of 12th and 13th century castles, but also frame decorations. Italian art follows with the architecture of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and the French Renaissance with details of the Louvre building and a panel of Francis I. Then comes the seventeenth century with the Church of the Invalids and a cartouche of the Door of the Old Sorbonne. One of the most impressive sketches for its details and finesse is that of a fireplace after Jean Lepautre serving as an example of the architecture of the century of Louis XIV. Foucault also represents the profile of a silver teapot, a garden fence seen from the front, an armch.
