The CARE Method counselor’s manual for Spanish-speaking clients is an essential resource for counselors dedicated to guiding Spanish-speaking and immigrant clients toward meaningful and lasting behavioral change. Based on the risk-need-responsivity model and built around a deep understanding of the immigrant experience, this manual offers a structured, compassionate approach to working with a population that requires more than a generic curriculum.
Inside, you’ll discover:
• Culture and its clinical implications: Understand how migration, long separations from family, language barriers, fear of the legal system, and the weight of vergüenza shape how your clients think, communicate, and respond in relationships, and how to use that understanding therapeutically.
• Comprehensive strategies for a resistant population: Practical techniques for building rapport with court-mandated clients who often distrust anything connected to the courts, helping them move from compliance to genuine accountability.
• Trauma, shame, and the roots of behavior: An in-depth look at how trauma histories, distrust of authority, and the fear of being seen as a failed provider or parent affect behavior, and what that means for how you deliver treatment.
• A truly individualized approach: Step-by-step guidance on implementing the CARE Method in a way that responds to each client’s specific risk level, needs, and responsivity factors, including those unique to immigrant life.
This manual gives counselors a clinically grounded framework that integrates theory with practice. It is not a one-size-fits-all program. It is a structured method built around who your clients actually are, and what this particular population needs to change.
Eronilde “Nil” Buckley, MA, LAC, LPC, DVCS, NCC, ACS, is a mental health counselor and founder of Vivus Counseling Services. Her years working with court-mandated populations led to the creation of the CARE Method. This edition reflects her deep respect for the culture, values, and complexity of the Spanish-speaking clients her counselors are sitting across from every day.
