xvi,218,[1]pp. 12mo. 19th-century three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Titlepage and first leaf of text repaired, occasional light dampstains. Very good. A rare Swedish translation of Bligh's A VOYAGE TO THE SOUTH SEA., first printed in London in 1792 as the official account of the Bounty expedition. The work was published with the consent of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and based largely on Bligh's journal. Hill describes the first British edition as "an extremely important book." The voyage of the Bounty from Tahiti to the West Indies was undertaken for the purpose of transplanting breadfruit seedlings. The plant was to become the staple food for sugar plantation slaves. A VOYAGE. was translated into French, German, Swedish, and Danish. "This Swedish edition, apparently based on the 1793 German edition by Georg Foster, deals almost entirely with the voyage to Tahiti, and very slightly with subsequent events of the voyage" - Bell. Not in Hill or Sabin. Ferguson locates only two copies, at the Mitchell Library in Sydney and the Kroepelien Collection in Oslo, while OCLC lists one copy at the James Ford Bell Library.
