Hardcover is wheat colored with dark brown lettering on spine. Red and white monochrome maps on endpapers. Pages are clean and tight; almost crisp, as if never used. Has some b/w or red/white monochrome drawings. The frontispiece is a fold out of 'Special Instructions.' by John Butterfield, President on one side; reverse side has the mail schedule between St. Louis, MO/Memphis, TN and San Francisco, CA; this is a folded section, still pristine. Originally published in 1942, this is the 5th printing from 1962; a photographic facsimile of the private press of C. F. Braun & Co. , Alhambra, CA. Sections are Ormsby's Articles: Tipton, MO; Near Red River, Indian Territory; Near Fort Belknap, TX; Near El Paso, TX; Tucson, AZ; two from San Francisco, CA; St. Louis, MO; an appendix: Fort Smith to Memphis; index. Absolutely fascinating insights into pre-Civil War travel by pioneers and adventurers in the mid 19th century; their adventures, sights, insights, peoples encountered, etc. ; B&W Illustrations; 6 1/4 x 9 1/2; 179 pages; Hardcover has light bumping and shelf wear.
