Help children turn first-day McFlutters into brave moments!
Starting school can bring excitement, curiosity, and plenty of nervous little “McFlutters.” Butter Bee Flutters and the First Day McFlutters: A Social-Emotional Learning & Activity Companion Pack gives teachers, families, homeschool educators, counselors, and support staff meaningful, hands-on ways to help young children recognize their feelings, build confidence, practice kindness, and discover that they can do brave things—even when the McFlutters come along.
Inspired by the children's book Butter Bee Flutters and the First Day McFlutters, this 59-page companion extends Butter Bee's gentle message through social-emotional learning activities, literacy experiences, games, crafts, family connections, and opportunities for reflection.
Children can explore and practice:
• Recognizing and naming emotions
• Identifying their own “McFlutters”
• Calming strategies and positive self-talk
• Beginning sounds and positional vocabulary
• Family and classroom connections
• Confidence, courage, and kindness
• Writing, drawing, and personal reflection
Inside you'll find family connection activities, Parent Goodbye Tips, the McFlutter Meter, McFlutter and Helpful Honeycomb activities, Honeycomb Match games, Find Butter Bee positional vocabulary activities, beginning-sound practice, Brave Breathing Pinwheels, a Build Your Butter Bee Puppet craft, My Brave Badge, Honeycomb of Courage, classroom hive activities, coloring pages, name activities, Butter Bee's Brave Journal, and more.
Designed with flexibility in mind, activities can be used during the first days of school, morning meetings, learning centers, counseling or SEL lessons, small groups, homeschool learning, family activities, or whenever a child needs a little extra support finding their brave.
Created by veteran educator and practicing educational diagnostician Kimberly Hierholzer, this companion combines nearly three decades of experience in education with playful learning and meaningful opportunities for conversation and connection.
Because Butter Bee doesn't teach children that worries simply disappear. She helps them discover something even more powerful:
They can have big feelings and still do brave things.
No McFlutter will stop me!
