Paperback. You bought AI to save time. So why are you still cleaning up after it? It's 9:04 at night, and your laptop is still glowing. You are rewriting an AI-drafted email that should have been finished before dinner. The proposal looked polished, yet the offer was wrong. A salesperson quoted an old price because the current sheet was buried in a private folder. The hour AI was supposed to save has become another hour of cleanup. You want your time back. You want work you can trust and a team that can move forward without bringing every question to you. A better prompt will not get you there. AI cannot use business knowledge you have never captured. It needs what any new hire needs: current information, a clear process, an accurate picture of your customers, and a clear line showing where human judgment takes over. Most AI advice puts capability before context. When context is missing, AI does not reduce confusion. It amplifies it. The real challenge is not simply an AI gap. It is a business intelligence gap. Business Before AI is the practical field guide for closing it. Written for owners and leaders of small businesses and professional service firms, it gives you a clear process for turning scattered business knowledge into work your people and AI can execute with greater clarity, consistency, and trust. Inside, you'll learn how to: Choose an improvement that matters. Use the Intelligence Gap Scan to identify the one business result worth pursuing before investing in another tool.Give AI the context it needs. Create a one-page Context Snapshot with the facts, sources, customers, and standards behind the work.Keep human judgment where it belongs. Draw the Human Line between what AI may prepare, what a person must review, and what only a human can decide.Put your team's expertise to work. Build a Business Brain Inventory so critical knowledge no longer lives in one person's memory, inbox, or private folder.Reduce the work that comes back to you. Redesign one real process so your people know what they own, where AI contributes, and when to stop and ask.Every chapter ends with a Build It Now exercise applied to the same process from your business. By the final page, you will have defined the result, created the briefing, set decision boundaries, captured essential knowledge, and designed how your people and AI work together. Your team gains clarity too. People know what they own, where their experience matters, and when to stop and ask. The work comes back to you less, and when it does, it is for the decisions that truly need you. The book opens with a six-question readiness check and closes with the 18-statement Human-AI Readiness Assessment. Rather than simply telling you whether your business is ready, it reveals which of the six areas is limiting your progress: Leadership, Process, Context, People, Governance, or Measurement. Score again in ninety days to see what has changed and where to focus next. Now picture next Monday. Instead of starting with another tool, your team begins with the work that matters and the truth is needed to do it well. Start with one process. Build the clarity it needs. Give yourself room to lead. Business Before AI. Human intelligence, amplified. By Eric Goodman, PhD, former business school dean; Scott Sullivan, three-time bestselling author who has trained more than 100,000 leaders; and Mamie-Jean Lamley, international speaker who has led experiences for audiences totaling more than 70,000 people. It’s 9:04 at night, and your laptop is still glowing.
Inside, you’ll learn how to:
- Choose an improvement that matters. Use the Intelligence Gap Scan to identify the one business result worth pursuing before investing in another tool.
- Give AI the context it needs. Create a one-page Context Snapshot with the facts, sources, customers, and standards behind the work.
- Keep human judgment where it belongs. Draw the Human Line between what AI may prepare, what a person must review, and what only a human can decide.
- Put your team’s expertise to work. Build a Business Brain Inventory so critical knowledge no longer lives in one person’s memory, inbox, or private folder.
- Reduce the work that comes back to you. Redesign one real process so your people know what they own, where AI contributes, and when to stop and ask.
Your team gains clarity too. People know what they own, where their experience matters, and when to stop and ask. The work comes back to you less, and when it does, it is for the decisions that truly need you.
The book opens with a six-question readiness check and closes with the 18-statement Human-AI Readiness Assessment. Score again in ninety days to see what has changed and where to focus next.
Now picture next Monday. Instead of starting with another tool, your team begins with the work that matters and the truth is needed to do it well.
