Item description from seller

ix, [1], 637 p. illustrations, frontispiece ; ISBN 9781429093095 Christ Church Burial Ground at 5th & Arch Streets in Philadelphia, across from the Visitor Center & the Constitution Center ; The design of this work is to preserve a record of the inscriptions on the tombstones in and around Christ Church and in the burial-ground at Fifth and Arch Streets. Time has made such inroads on these monuments that many of the words are now difficult to decipher, and on some of the stones no names are legible to tell of the remains that rest beneath ; and as so many associations cluster around these monuments, it would prove a source of regret in after years that any now legible should pass into oblivion. These inscriptions, therefore, have been carefully copied, and are presented to the reader in the following pages precisely as they appear on the tablets, so that when the hand of time may have washed away the memorial as now seen, these words, endeared to so many family circles, will remain, and the position of the graves kept in remembrance. Representations of the ground plots of the churchyard and burial-ground have been prepared by actual survey, and lithographic maps of the same appear throughout the book. Every grave that is marked by a stone is there designated by numerals, and corresponding numbers in the printed matter point out the full inscriptions as they appear on the indexed stones. The survey does not include the stones that have been placed in the ground since October, 1863. The property on which the church is built was purchased in the year 1695, only thirteen years after the city was founded, and when the population numbered about 3,000. The first church interments were made in this ground, but the population of the city increasing rapidly, it was soon found necessary to secure a lot in the suburbs for a burial-place. Accordingly, in the year 1719, the ground at Fifth and Arch Streets was purchased, and most of the interments were afterwards made there. ; FINE. …
