Print on Demand. This book is an extract from Dr. Johann Schoepf's 18th-century travelogue, published for the first time in English. A naturalist, Schoepf provides a detailed account of the natural world and social landscapes of the United States following the Revolutionary War. The book covers topics including the medical practices of the time, the use of plants in treatment and cookery, local horticultural efforts, the impact of the climate on agriculture, and the cultivation of domestic and foreign species of plants in the different regions he visited. His text reveals fascinating insights into the relationship between European settlers and the natural environment of their new home, as well as the tension between traditional European knowledge and New World realities. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Dr. Kuhn, of German origin, is the Professor of Botany and Materia Medica. He is a disciple of the lamented Linnaeus, who named an order of plants in his honor, the Kahlua - which Dr. Kuhn himself has not seen, although it exists in Pensylvania. The professorship of Botany is an empty title, since throughout the summer there IS neither lecturing nor botanizing.
