When the greatest love of a woman's life turns out to have been someone else's revenge plan all along, she has to decide what's left of her once the lie is gone.

Elara Idu doesn't believe in fairy tales - she believes in Adrian Voss. Two years of steady devotion have convinced her that some loves really are as certain as they feel: the kind that show up early, remember your coffee order, and kneel in the sand at golden hour holding a ring that fits like it was made for you. So when Adrian proposes on a Lagos beach at sunset, Elara says yes without a single hesitation. She has spent her whole life being careful. For once, she lets herself believe she's finally safe.

She is not safe. She is not even, as it turns out, loved.

On their wedding night, Adrian tells her the truth with the same unhurried calm he does everything: none of it was real. Not the beach. Not the ring. Not two years of small tendernesses she'd catalogued like treasure. Her marriage was never a love story - it was the final move in a revenge plot two decades in the making, and Elara was never the woman he wanted. She was the debt he'd come to collect.

Now she has to rebuild herself from the wreckage of a love that was never love at all - and figure out whether the man unraveling in front of her, the one who built his entire identity on a lie he didn't know was a lie, is a stranger she should walk away from, or the only person who might finally help her find out what's true.

Because some marriages end in divorce. Elara's is going to end in the truth. And she's not sure yet which one will hurt more.

BUILT ON SAND is a story about what happens when the foundation of your greatest love turns out to have never existed at all - and the slow, unglamorous, ferociously worth-it work of building something real out of the ruins.

Erika Alagba writes stories about love as it really is-complicated, resilient, and shaped by the seasons we don't always expect. Her work explores marriage, grief, identity, and the quiet moments when people are forced to choose between endurance and self-preservation.

With a deep interest in human behavior and emotional healing, she draws from years of listening to stories that rarely make it into neat conversations. Her writing is grounded in compassion, honesty, and the belief that telling the truth can be a form of care.

This is her first novel, written for women and families who have felt stretched to their limits and are still searching for clarity, hope, and the courage to begin again.

She believes that becoming yourself is not an act of rebellion, but an act of survival.
