"The Building of Satellite Towns" is a comprehensive study of urban development and a foundational text in the history of town planning. Written by C.B. Purdom, a leading figure in the garden city movement, the work explores the practical and theoretical challenges of creating self-contained communities that balance urban convenience with rural accessibility. The book provides a detailed analysis of early satellite town experiments, most notably the development of Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City in England.

Purdom examines the economic, social, and structural factors necessary to build successful satellite towns, advocating for planned expansion as a solution to the overcrowding and industrial congestion of major metropolitan centers. Through a combination of historical context and forward-thinking proposals, the author discusses land tenure, transportation, agricultural belts, and the vital role of civic administration. This work remains an essential resource for architects, urban historians, and sociologists interested in the origins of modern city planning and the evolution of the garden city ideal. It offers a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century visions for a more organized and humane approach to human habitation.
