BUILD A PRODUCTION-READY SAAS BACKEND WITH FASTAPI
Building a SaaS application takes more than creating API endpoints and connecting a payment provider. You need reliable tenant isolation, authentication, permissions, subscriptions, background jobs, testing, and production-ready architecture.
Building SaaS Backends with FastAPI guides you through building a multi-tenant SaaS backend using FastAPI, PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy, Redis, background workers, automated testing, Docker, and CI/CD.
You will build OrbitDesk, a collaboration SaaS application with organizations, workspaces, projects, tasks, memberships, roles, subscriptions, usage limits, background workflows, and audit records.
Inside, you’ll learn how to:
-
Design secure multi-tenant SaaS architecture and transaction boundaries.
-
Build modular FastAPI applications that can evolve as the product grows.
-
Model tenant-owned data with PostgreSQL and SQLAlchemy.
-
Implement authentication, invitations, organization switching, and recovery flows.
-
Build teams, roles, permissions, resource policies, and audit trails.
-
Design subscriptions, entitlements, quotas, usage metering, and billing workflows.
-
Handle duplicate and out-of-order billing webhooks, upgrades, downgrades, and reconciliation.
-
Build reliable Redis background jobs with idempotent processing and scheduled workflows.
-
Apply the Transactional Outbox Pattern for reliable asynchronous operations.
-
Test tenant isolation, authorization, concurrency, security, migrations, and failure scenarios.
-
Deploy with Docker, PostgreSQL, Redis, health checks, logging, metrics, and operational monitoring.
-
Build safer CI/CD and database migration workflows.
-
Prepare for production scaling, launch, recovery, rollback, and ongoing operations.
The book addresses real SaaS challenges including cross-tenant data exposure, concurrent writes, repeated webhooks, quota races, failed background jobs, database migrations, provider outages, and production recovery.
Each chapter builds on the same OrbitDesk codebase, connecting database design, authentication, authorization, billing, asynchronous processing, testing, and deployment into one practical architecture.
Ideal for:
-
Python and FastAPI developers ready to build serious SaaS backends.
-
Backend engineers moving from single-tenant to multi-tenant systems.
-
Technical founders building products with teams, subscriptions, quotas, and background workflows.
-
Developers seeking practical PostgreSQL and SQLAlchemy patterns for SaaS applications.
Move beyond isolated FastAPI examples and learn how the major backend boundaries fit together in a real production-oriented, multi-tenant SaaS architecture.
