Claude Code can help you write, understand, test, improve, and manage software. But getting the most from it takes more than simply asking it to generate code.
Building with Claude Code is a practical guide to using Claude Code effectively for real software development. It shows you how to work with AI as a development partner while still keeping control over your code, your tools, and your projects.
You’ll start with the basics and gradually learn how to build better and more reliable AI-powered development workflows.
The book shows you how to give Claude Code the right information about your project, break large tasks into manageable steps, test its work, and create repeatable ways of working.
As you progress, you’ll learn how to extend Claude Code with Skills, connect it to external tools and services using MCP, and use Hooks to automate important checks and actions.
You’ll also explore more advanced topics, including AI coding agents, multi-agent workflows, automated software-development pipelines, and the Claude Agent SDK. These techniques can help you move from using AI for individual coding tasks to building systems that can handle larger parts of the development process.
Inside the book, you’ll learn how to:
• Get started with Claude Code and use it in real software projects
• Give Claude Code useful context about your codebase
• Turn ideas and requirements into clear development tasks
• Build practical workflows for planning, coding, testing, and reviewing
• Create reusable Skills for tasks you perform regularly
• Connect Claude Code to external tools using MCP
• Use Hooks to automate checks and improve your workflow
• Build and coordinate multiple AI agents
• Create automated software-development workflows
• Use the Claude Agent SDK to build custom AI systems
• Make AI-assisted development safer, more reliable, and easier to manage
Who is this book for?
Building with Claude Code is written for software developers, programmers, AI engineers, DevOps engineers, technical leads, automation engineers, and advanced learners who want to get more out of AI-assisted software development.
You don’t need to be an AI researcher or expert. If you already have some programming experience and want to move beyond simple “write this code” prompts, this book provides a practical path forward.
One of the most important ideas throughout the book is that AI can make mistakes. Claude Code is powerful, but it should not be treated as something that is always right. Good AI-assisted development means giving the agent the right context, setting clear boundaries, testing what it produces, and reviewing important changes.
Whether you’re just getting started with Claude Code or you’re ready to explore Skills, MCP, Hooks, agents, automation, and the Agent SDK, Building with Claude Code will help you develop a more organized, practical, and reliable way to build software with AI.
If you’re ready to move beyond simply asking AI to write code and start using it as part of a real software-development workflow, this book is a practical place to begin.
