Tinted lithograph with original hand colour 22.5 x 16 cm, 28.9 x 22.2 cm (sheet), edges a little age-toned, one corner creased and another with a small paper fault, but in very good condition. A fine cameo portrait of Buddhist Priest from a temple in Simoda (Shimoda) on the southeastern Izu peninsula, after a daguerrotype by Eliphalet Brown, and prepared for Commodore Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan.". Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.
