Synopsis:

Getting tired of reading about those guided trips the well-known outdoor writers seem to always take If so, you'll find this book a refreshing change. It's the diary of a normal working guy who likes retriever dogs, using his weekends and vacation time to hunt and fish like the rest of us, "poor-boy" style, and learning and enjoying every minute of it.Early on, Jim Mauney discovered the value of working dog companions that never complained about tough going and could carry backpacks of game meat or food and other essentials. They also kept him from freezing to death with their body heat when severe weather forced them to bivouac on several occasions with just normal hunting clothing. Ever wonder if you can get that big fish to net before the line breaks As Jim found out to his delight, his dogs, trained to retrieve well in field trials, could jump into the water and clamp those powerful jaws around the largest salmon or steelhead and bring it to him. (Saves a lot of line, lures, and cussing.) There's lots of waterfowl hunting, fishing trips, and even climbing the "trail of 13 ladders" on Grandfather Mountain, the oldest mountain in the world and a major feature of western North Carolina. It was on those many upland bird hunts that the dogs really shone. They could cover the most difficult cover to find the birds and then retrieve downed birds and any cripples. Field trial participation helped in honing such instincts and Jim's dogs excelled in both venues, with several Field Champions. You'll share Jim's joy as promising pups prove their worth as mature dogs and feel his sadness when the harsh reality of working outdoor dog life brings several companions to a much-to-early end. Jim and his canine companions hunted most of the big-game species of Alaska and the western states during his 40 years of life there. As Jim found on several hunts, good dog companions can prevent serious situations by warning of hostile bears nearby
