First Edition. Book and dust jacket are in Near Fine condition. Clean, tightly bound, and unmarked. A lovey vintage book. Buddhism and Zen is a foundational primer designed for Westerners seeking an introduction to Zen Buddhism. Published in 1953, it aims to make the often-complex principles and practices of Zen accessible to a new audience. The book's core purpose is to provide a concise yet comprehensive overview of essential Zen concepts, terms, and answers to common questions posed by those unfamiliar with the tradition. Rather than a deep philosophical treatise, it functions as a practical guide for beginners. Nyogen Senzaki was one of the first Zen masters to bring authentic Zen practice to the United States, and Ruth Strout McCandless was his student and collaborator. Their combined efforts in Buddhism and Zen served as a vital bridge for early Western interest in Zen, presenting its essence in a clear, non-dogmatic, and practical manner. It reflects Senzaki's teaching style, which often emphasized simplicity, self-reliance, and a critical approach to established beliefs, both Eastern and Western. Octavo, 87 pp., glossary.
