Modern urban terraced houses or row houses emerged in Europe from the 17th century onwards. Usually two to three storeys high and with a garden at the back, they formed the traditional urban block. In Brussels, this bourgeois form of housing took on a particularly varied and inspiring form – including the well-known Art Nouveau residences – and forms the DNA of the city to this day. This publication analyses 100 selected examples illustrating the emergence of the terraced house and its further development in other forms of housing. The result is a broad panorama and a history of the architecture and development of the city of Brussels with its particularly heterogenous cityscape. This expanded edition comprises a new chapter by Kristiaan Borret, the city's former bouwmeester. Ten new case studies were added and the content was updated. Gérald Ledent ist Architekturprofessor an der UCLouvain in Brüssel, wo er sowohl Theorie als auch Entwurf unterrichtet. In seiner Doktorarbeit "Potentiels Relationnels" untersuchte er die Beziehungen zwischen Räumen und Nutzungen in Wohnungen anhand von mehr als 10.000 Wohneinheiten in Brüssel. Ledent spielt eine koordinierende Rolle im Forschungsteam Uses&Spaces, in dem er sich mit der Beziehung zwischen Nutzungen und Räumen in der Architektur sowie mit typologischen Morphologien im Wohnungsbau beschäftigt. Kürzlich war Ledent Mitherausgeber von Sustainable Dwelling (Brüssel, PUL - PU Louvain, 2019), einem Buch, das die sozialen und räumlichen Dimensionen des Wohnens unter dem Aspekt der Nachhaltigkeit untersucht. Er ist auch der Autor von Institutions & the City: The Role of Architecture (Zürich, Park Books, 2022), das die Rolle der Architektur bei der Schaffung und Aufrechterhaltung von sozialen Strukturen untersucht. Ledent verfügt über umfangreiche Erfahrungen als praktizierender Architekt in den Bereichen öffentliche Gebäude und kollektive Wohnsiedlungen in Belgien und im Ausland. Alessandro Porotto ist Postdoktorand in der Forschungsgruppe Uses&Spaces an der UCLouvain, Brüssel, und in der Forschungsgruppe Architecture and the City an der Delft University of Technology, Niederlande. Seine Forschungsinteressen konzentrieren sich auf die typologische und historische Entwicklung sowie auf neue Formen des städtischen Wohnungsbaus und urbaner Blöcke in verschiedenen Städten. Er ist Architekt mit einem Abschluss am Politecnico di Torino, Italien (2012) und promovierte an der École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Schweiz (2018) mit einer Dissertation über die Wohntypologien der Zwischenkriegszeit in Wien und Frankfurt am Main. Er hat am Kunstgeschichtlichen Institut der Emory University, USA, geforscht und Initiativen für den öffentlichen Wohnungsbau in Atlanta untersucht (2020). Neben Artikeln und Beiträgen zu internationalen Konferenzen ist er Autor der Publikation L'intelligence des formes: Le projet de logements collectifs à Vienne et Francfort (Genf, MétisPresses, 2019).
Gérald Ledent is an architecture professor at UCLouvain in Brussels, where he teaches theory as well as in various studios. His PhD thesis, “Potentiels Relationnels”, explores the relations in dwelling between spaces and uses illustrated by an atlas of more than 10,000 housing units in Brussels. Ledent plays a coordination role in the Uses&Spaces research team, in which his interests focus on the relationship in architecture between uses and spaces, housing typo-morphologies, and research by design. Recently, Ledent co-edited Sustainable Dwelling (Brussels, PUL – PU Louvain, 2019), a book that examines the social and spatial dimensions of housing from a sustainability perspective. He is also the author of Institutions & the City: The Role of Architecture (Zürich, Park Books, 2022), which explores the role of architecture in establishing and perpetuating social structures and ideologies. Ledent has extensive experience as a practitioner in the fields of public buildings and collective housing developments in Belgium and abroad. He is the co-founder of the architectural practice KIS studio (Keep It Simple studio), which aims to avoid unnecessary complexity in order to focus on the essentials.
