Paperback. A chronicle of what remains when you are left behind. This is not a book about loneliness. It is a testimony to abandonment. In the blue armchair that smells of Vicks, on the metal hospital bench, in the endless Social Security line, in the room where family no longer fits-here live Don Angel, Dona Carmen, Dona Pura, and Don Julio. Their lives have been reduced to waiting: for calls that never come, for visits that are canceled, for a system that processes them as case files. But in the margins of that oblivion-at the wake of a stranger, in a hurricane shelter, in the farce of a health fair-something rough and real is born among them. A brotherhood. Not of easy affection, but of shared need. They do not save each other. They hold each other up.With precise prose that grants not an ounce of sentimentality, Edwin Alverio maps the terrain of this accidental fellowship. This is a novel that does not sweeten, does not console, and does not ask for forgiveness. It only shows-with a clarity that cuts like glass-the human geography of those whom the world decided had nothing useful left to give. And who, nevertheless, remain. For readers seeking honest literature, far from comforting fiction. A chronicle of what remains when you are left behind.
This is not a book about loneliness. It is a testimony to abandonment.
In the blue armchair that smells of Vicks, on the metal hospital bench, in the endless Social Security line, in the room where family no longer fits—here live Don Ángel, Doña Carmen, Doña Pura, and Don Julio. Their lives have been reduced to waiting: for calls that never come, for visits that are canceled, for a system that processes them as case files.
But in the margins of that oblivion—at the wake of a stranger, in a hurricane shelter, in the farce of a health fair—something rough and real is born among them. A brotherhood. Not of easy affection, but of shared need. They do not save each other. They hold each other up.
With precise prose that grants not an ounce of sentimentality, Edwin Alverio maps the terrain of this accidental fellowship. This is a novel that does not sweeten, does not console, and does not ask for forgiveness. It only shows—with a clarity that cuts like glass—the human geography of those whom the world decided had nothing useful left to give.
And who, nevertheless, remain.
For readers seeking honest literature, far from comforting fiction.
