This is the Third Edition of "The Brook Kerith" by George Moore, published one month after the special limited printing of the First Edition in August of 1916. It is dressed in quarter-bound cloth spine and marbled paper-covered boards. This copy has obviously been well-read, but remains in clean, serviceable condition. Please read our condition report below. George Moore was one of the most important Irish authors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He introduced the English reading world to the realism of the French authors of the time, many of whom were friends and acquaintances of Moore. Moore was much involved with Lady Gregory and William Butler Yeats during the Irish Literary Renaissance. Other than his importance and high place in Irish literary history, Moore's work is hard to categorize. He was an influence on James Joyce. "The Brook Kerith" was highly controversial, for it depicted a Jesus of flesh and blood who did not die on the cross but survived to then journey to India to seek wisdom. In other words, the Jesus of "Brook Kerith" was non-divine. It makes for a fascinating read. The original owner's signature is inked on the front fly-leaf and the title page. "Dudley Poore" This is the signature of Harvard poet and translator Dudley Poore, friend of e e cummings, John Dos Passos and other Harvard alums. Poore and Dos Passos went to Spain together after being discharged from the U. S. Army Ambulance Corp. in 1919. Poore wrote about their experiences there, where it seems they had a high old time. Poore often spent time visiting in the Skaneateles area, which is near here. This copy has the provenance / ownership signature of Dudley Poore' (two signatures) showing his previous ownership of the book. PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade hardcover; approximately 5 5/8" x 8 7/8" ; half-bound , brown cloth, compartmented spine, cloth board tips with marbled paper-covered boards; Paper title label for spine is missing; rough-cut fore- and bottom edges; 471 pages CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS ONLY -- This is a previously owned book that has seen use and displays signs of that use, but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR - Moderate surface rub - the marbling displays nicely - the board edges are worn with small loss and abrasion - corner tips are bumped with loss to paper and exposure of underlying boards. Spine extremities are compressed and display modest abrasion, with fraying (most noticeable at joint extremities); cloth surface is clean; but title label is missing* . BINDING - The book has obviously been read and the leaves open widely, with binding thread exposed at a few points , ie: 'cracked' , but all-in-all the binding remains solid, if a bit lax in the case, and no leaves are detached. INTERIOR - Paper is unavoidably toned - (war-time production used whatever materials were available - the paper used in the book varies - some of the leaves are quite browned*) - the volume is considerably foxed on the leaves nearest the case* ; there are a few fore-edge irregularities where the leaves were separated incautiously; at the front of the book, a few leaves are corner-bumped. For the most part the interior remains clean and presentable with but modest signs of handling. No marking or writing other than the original owner's two inked signatures (Dudley Poore) (*all reasons for the condition grade).…
