About the Author: The author was born in the village in 1935 and attended the village school. His grandfather had founded the village Baptist church and his father was clerk to the parish council. A forerunner of the history was written as a prize essay at Bedford School in 1953. The author was subsequently Professor of Labour Law at University College London and is a Fellow of that College
