About this Item
Blue printed wraps 13x19cm. 24, (1)pp including b/w full-page map and photos. Very good, lightly creased. John Eppstein formed the British Society for International Understanding to "find out and tell the truth about the great variety of peoples with whom we British have to deal and the real forces at work in international politics". It published the British Survey Main Edition, and British Survey Popular Series for use in class. In the inter-war years Eppstein worked in the Foreign Office and on British delegations to the League of Nations. As Director and Editor of the British Survey he selected authors based on direct experience: "They include men in official positions who must remain anonymous, many retired ambassadors and colonial administrators, businessmen, engineers, journalists and observant travellers", mostly British (British Survey April 1964). This from the Popular Series was issued after the restoration of order, with increasing prosperity from oil, and the 12-year old Faisal II reassuringly at school in England. It contains sections on Iraq's early history and waterways, the encroachment of the desert, Iraq today (wildlife in the desert, nomads and townsmen, dress, Baghdad, alleys, a typical house, shops, bazaars, the coffee shop, Mohammedan ways, mosques and churches, Mohammedan Holy Days), international importance (air communications, oil), Government (the Mandate, independence, Rashid Ali Rebellion, Siege of Habbaniya, and restoration of order). The inner front wrap lists general facts and figures. Photos show people (fishermen, silversmiths, Kurdish porter, King's Bodyguard) and places (the airport, Kadhimain Mosque, Baghdad, Hamilton's Road etc). Map features include railways and oil pipelines. Seller Inventory # 4692
