First edition. Octavo. [6], 102, [1, table of contents], [1] pp. Publisher's faux-leather flexible wrappers with black cover lettering. Very small typographic bookplate on lower edge of front blank, else a very good copy of the scarce first edition.Paul Case (1884-1954) was an occultist of the first order and his interests were very wide indeed. He studied Pranayama Yoga, was a high ranking member of Alpha et Omega (the successor organization to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn) and founded his own school of hidden wisdom that he named Builders of the Adytum (which is still extant today). It seems that his first great enthusiasm was Tarot. "In the year 1901, Case met the occultist Claude Bragdon while both were performing at a charity performance. Bragdon asked Case what he thought the origin of playing cards was. After pursuing the question in his father's library, Case discovered a link to tarot, called 'The Game of Man'. Thus began what would become Case's lifelong study of the tarot, and leading to the creation of the B.O.T.A. tarot deck, which Case called a "corrected" version of the Rider?Waite cards" (wiki). One crucial point of difference between Case's understanding of the Tarot and the stance taken by most Tarot experts is that Case did not use the Tarot for divinatory purposes. To him the Tarot was a means examining the self.
