MID-CENTURY HANDBOOK FOR STRUCTURAL BRICK AND TILE DESIGN. A practical engineering reference issued by the Structural Clay Products Institute, bringing together contemporary design data for brick and structural clay tile construction. Harry C. Plummer, the Institute's Director of Engineering and Technology, covers engineering rather than primarily architectural considerations, with extensive tables, diagrams, specifications, dimensions, and construction details. This first-edition copy retains an accompanying large-format Heights of Brick Courses: Regular and Modular reference chart, designed for quick professional calculation of brick-course heights and bearing an A.I.A. file designation. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: AN ILLUSTRATED PROFESSIONAL REFERENCE. +++ Red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and construction-tool motif to the front; 6 by 9.25 inches. 292 pages. +++ Illustrated throughout with technical drawings, diagrams, tables, plans, elevations, sections, and engineering data. +++ First edition, November 1950, printed in the United States by The Mallery Printing Co., Inc., Washington, D.C. Published at $5.00. +++ Accompanied by an approximately 8.5 by 22 inch, eight-panel cardstock reference chart, Heights of Brick Courses: Regular and Modular, providing tabular calculations for regular and modular brick courses. +++ The facing endpaper bears the firm's ink stamp and a mounted Florida Georgia Brick & Tile Co. business card identifying the company as a supplier of aluminum and steel products, metal windows and doors, steel joists, metal roof deck, and fireproof building products. +++ The accompanying brick-course chart retains an attached slip offering additional copies of the manual on request. CONDITION: Very Good. Binding firm with modest exterior handling and rubbing; gilt somewhat dulled. Interior generally clean with light age-toning and occasional minor spotting. Accompanying brick-course chart shows expected handling and age, including some soiling and wear, but remains intact and usable. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: ENGINEERING THE POSTWAR BUILDING BOOM. Published at the beginning of the 1950s construction boom, the handbook documents contemporary professional practice in masonry engineering, including standardized brick dimensions, modular masonry, structural clay tile, bonding, walls, floors, and related design calculations. FROM HANDBOOK TO JOBSITE. The accompanying brick-course chart is particularly evocative of everyday professional practice: a durable, file-ready calculation aid intended for architects, engineers, contractors, and building-material suppliers. Together with the Jacksonville distributor material, this copy preserves both the technical reference and evidence of its circulation through the postwar Florida construction trade. SUBJECTS: Brick Construction, Masonry, Structural Engineering, Structural Clay Tile, Building Materials, Modular Construction, Architectural Engineering, Construction Standards, Postwar Architecture, Building Technology, Florida Building Trades, Jacksonville Florida, Structural Clay Products Institute, Architecture, Engineering, Construction, Technical Handbooks.…
