London. Cassell and Company. 1898. Seventh illustrated edition. Hard Cover. Red cloth spine panel over green boards. Spine ends are bumped and there is a vignette of a shot gun with black titles. Endpapers are browned and there is a former owner paste down to the front endpaper; written in cursive to the ffep dated 1900. On a blank page in the prelims is what looks like a list of gun parts written in pencil. Frontispiece of gun barrel welding. Illustrated throughout with drawings and diagrams. Quite heavy wear to the edges but remains attractive; illustrated on both boards. The author's aim is to induce all who can to participate in a manly sport, and to advance the interests of those who can look to the Gun for pleasure, health or occupation." This treatise was written in the era of great change when nitro and smokeless powders were coming along, materials and design were catching up with this, and breech-loading systems and locks were assuming their contemporary forms. This book and its many variations document the later stages of the mutation of the musket into the shotgun. The first issue of 'The Breech-Loader' was sold within four months of its publication, and the favour since shown by the sporting public has encouraged the author to print yearly revised editions.
