Item description from seller

An acclaimed series of essays set in a fictional New England Boardinghouse, written by a Fireside Poet, bound in half calf. The "Breakfast-Table" Series, including The Autocrat at the Breakfast-Table; The Professor at the Breakfast-Table; The Poet at the Breakfast-Table, a prolific collection of prose essays written by acclaimed American writer Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. Three volumes bound in one. Published in 1890, first published from 1858-1872. In half calf, with purple cloth boards. Contains a frontispiece of Holmes by J.A.J. Wilcox. A prize copy presented by the Lord Admiralty, with a stamp to the verso of the title leaf. Known as Holmes's most enduring work, the series is an intriguing series of essays presented as a one-sided dialogue in a New England Boarding House, combining both wit and reflection which originally helped established the Atlantic Monthly as a successful magazine. One of the Fireside Poets, Holmes was hailed as one of the best writers of his day, and as seen in these works, was a proud Bostonian and New Englander. In half calf, with purple cloth boards. Externally, slight spotting and to calf, and rubbing marks, heavier rubbing to joint and extremities. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Slight fading to cloth edges, and small signs of wear to spine label. Browned end papers are clean. Prize bookplate to front free end paper. Internally, firmly bound. Lord Admiralty stamp to verso of title leaf. Pages are bright and clean, with faint spotting to title leaf and frontispiece. Very Good.
