Very Good. Original black cloth binding with light rubbing and minor shelf wear. Gilt spine lettering remains bright and highly legible. Binding is sound and square. Pages are clean and bright with minimal age toning. Contains numerous anatomical illustrations and surgical plates throughout. Contemporary bookseller's pencil notation to front free endpaper. No institutional markings noted in the photographs provided. A substantial and highly specialized early twentieth-century neurosurgical monograph devoted entirely to the diagnosis, pathology, and operative treatment of brain abscesses. Written by Wells P. Eagleton, a prominent New Jersey surgeon and President of the American Otological Society, the work reflects the rapid advances in neurological surgery that followed World War I and the development of modern cranial operative techniques. Particularly noteworthy are the detailed surgical illustrations depicting osteoplastic cranial flaps, intracranial exploration, skull anatomy, and operative approaches to abscesses arising from middle-ear and mastoid infections. At a time when antibiotics did not yet exist, brain abscess represented one of the most dangerous complications encountered by surgeons and otologists. Eagleton's work documents the state of neurosurgical practice immediately prior to the antibiotic era and serves as an important record of early twentieth-century surgical innovation. An increasingly desirable title for collectors of neurosurgery, neurology, otology, medical illustration, cranial surgery, and the history of medicine. The numerous anatomical plates and detailed operative diagrams make the volume particularly attractive to both collectors and institutional libraries. Carefully packed and shipped in a box. Shipped via USPS with tracking provided. International shipping available. Additional photographs available upon request. Please review photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. Returns accepted within the AbeBooks 30-day return window. SCI 1c. …
