180 Pages. Chili was once a simple meal in a bowl, served up by a chuckwagon cook, but today's fans of the much-mutated mixture of meat and chiles come from all walks of life, Chili fan clubs pepper the globe, and to chili lovers everywhere Frank X. Tolbert, newspaper columnist and aficionado of fiery fare, left A Bowl of Red as his legacy. The bowl of red is the main course in this saga, but Tolbert also describes such legendary regional specialties as mesquite jelly, crotalus, and jalapeno corn bread hot enough to ignite your taste budsTo find the best cooks of these exotic dishes, Tobert traveled the back road's of the South and West. The memorable folk he met over the years are still alive in these pages. New features in this printing of Tolbert's classic include a foreword by Big Bend celebrity Hallie Stillwell and her own recipe for lean venison chili. An index to other recipes in the book has also been added.
