Item description from seller

Cloth hardcover, xi + 178 pages, NOT ex-library. Minor handling wear only. Book is clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Bright untorn dust jacket. -- This book dismantles the traditional statistical definition of youth as a fixed age group, such as 15-24 years old, arguing that this categorization is no longer tenable. The process of becoming an adult has extended, becoming a more complex and individualized life stage. The central question examines whether this prolongation is caused by external economic and institutional pressures creating widespread precarity, or if it represents a new, functional stage of cultural transformation and identity formation. The book argues these two opposing interpretations are not mutually exclusive but apply to different segments of the young population. The primary factor creating this social polarization is educational achievement, with a profound divide emerging between those with minimum school qualifications and others. Despite this blurring of boundaries and fragmentation, the concept of youth as a preparatory period remains valid for the majority, whose aspirations still center on stable employment and family. This work documents a shift away from a series of discontinuous, sudden, and irreversible steps towards adulthood into a continuous and progressive journey. Drawing on French data and analyses, the work explores specific issues like verbal exchanges between parents and children and the impacts of the stigmatisation of appearance to illustrate this new reality.…
