From the Author
There are quite a few books on the market which explain accounting mechanics to non-financial managers. In writing this book, I wanted to convey that financial management involves much more than just preparing financial statements; it extends to cash and inventory management, budgets & planning, internal controls, cost accounting, and more. In smaller companies, most top managers are not trained in financial management nor do they have as much interest in this area as in selling or product development. At the same time, many of the people holding controller or accountant positions in these smaller companies lack training or experience outside of financial accounting. As a result, those critical activities mentioned above get little, if any, attention. Bottom Line Basics addresses these key financial management areas. It is written for non-financial managers. For each topic, it lays out the benefits of improved financial management and then, in clear, non-technical language, spells out steps to follow. Though written for non-financial managers, accountants and controllers will also find the book useful as it discusses how they can expand from a reporting role to a proactive, management team member. I wrote this book because I felt that the job of small company financial management was misunderstood and underrated. I believe it fills an important gap, going beyond the mechanics of accounting to explain the full breadth of financial management. I am hopeful that those who read this book will start to see how the accounting & finance function can be more than just an overhead function, but can be a vital activity providing real payback & direction.
