The Great Boston Fire of 1872, which remains the largest fire in Boston’s history, is a unique and incredibly intriguing story that offers so many profound insights, messages, and warnings to those willing to delve into the details of the event. In fact, examining some of those very details is one of the purposes of this book, and yet its primary focus regards something far greater than merely bringing to light commonly overlooked pieces of historical information. This book’s utmost purpose and mission is to comparatively use information about the great fire in a discussion about figurative fires of negativity (gossip, bickering, power wars, selfishness, burn out, and more) that occur within modern churches, and the book’s emphasis regards how you and your church can go about effectively combating these fires. The hope behind this book is that God would allow the story of the great fire to get your attention, to be paralleled with various principles within his Word, and to bring you to a better understanding of how to prevent and extinguish the church-crippling fires of negativity that our arsonist-enemy Satan is hoping will destroy your church!
The learning will be interesting and challenging, but it will also be transforming and empowering for the life of your church. If you’re determined to let God’s Word dictate how you deal with fires of negativity, you can go ahead and say, “There will be no Boston fire in MY church!” As you and others begin applying the biblical principles identified within this book, your church will make sure of it. Let the fireproofing begin!
A nine-session study guide is included in the appendix of this book, and it designed to be used within a Sunday school or cell group setting. Each session’s material should last approximately 35-45 minutes within a talkative group, and the nine sessions correspond with the nine chapters of the book.
