Item description from seller

A smartly bound copy of this illustrated study on French bookbinding from The Portfolio No. 10 October, 1894. The Portfolio: Monographs on Artistic Subjects No. 10, October 1894. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece, seven colour plates, and thirty-one images in the text. Collated complete. An essay on bookbinding in France, with reference to early bindings, ornamental work, different materials, and many of the important figures in the development of this craft. Written by William Younger Fletcher, a distinguished English bibliophile and librarian, well-renowned for his extensive knowledge on books and book collecting during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. He was appointed assistant-keeper in the department of printed books in the British Museum. Edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton, an English artist, art critic and author who was a keen advocate of contemporary printmaking. Bound in modern cloth with the original card wraps bound in. Externally, excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and the odd small handling mark. Minor age toning to the extremities. Very Good Indeed.
