Architecture studio, fundamental to architecture school, is complex, challenging and exciting. It is multifarious, unique and breath-taking. How do you navigate this?
This Book of Tasks helps students and teachers navigate the process with curiosity and optimism through a flexible and instructive approach. Created by a team of experienced architects following a decade of collaborative studio teaching at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture, it provides an illustrated collection of instructive exercises for students and teachers of architecture, to guide and stimulate study and skill-building across the design cycles of a professional undergraduate architecture studio.
Multiple modes of activity and guidance help different learning styles: whether in person, or learning remotely, in a group, or learning on your own. Many illustrations, examples and signposted resources support study and suggest avenues for further independent enquiry and experimentation. For students it is a helping hand, a tutor in your pocket. For teachers the Book of Tasks fosters a reflexive approach and provides an equitable management framework,

About the Author
Sandy Britton ARB, Senior Lecturer at University of Liverpool School of Architecture, leads a final year undergraduate studio and teaches in BA, MArch and MA programmes. Her award-winning Studio and published pedagogy promotes themes of Liveable Cities and Fragile Futures. Her teaching is immersive, exploratory, Task-based and collaborative with multiple stakeholders of industry, public sector, community and LSA Research. Sandy’s previous work in architectural practice, as a design ambassador and architect, includes projects of housing, heritage reuse, specialist education, health and culture. Her practice informs her pedagogy.
Sarah Green ARB has tutored at University of Liverpool since 2014. Her particular interests are architectural psychology, representation and sustainability. Sarah has 14 years’ design experience built from residential and commercial architecture and interior design projects around the North West. She studied at the University of Sheffield, and worked for Cartwright Pickard, Sheppard Robson, Phaus and SPACE Architecture + Planning before establishing her own practice in Stockport; another architecture + interiors.
Tony Lees ARB is an Associate at Studio MUTT and a university educator with ten years of experience across BA and MArch studios. His career ranges from large-scale urban projects at prestigious global firms to award-winning cultural and residential schemes. A graduate of the University of Liverpool and The Bartlett (UCL) under the tutelage of Niall McLaughlin, Tony is a passionate advocate for the craft of architecture. He remains dedicated to fostering passion in others through the exploration of space, materiality, and the ways we interact with the built environment.
Giles Wheeldon ARB is Associate Director at Ian Chalk Architects where he has delivered award-winning schemes with focus on adaptive reuse within highly sensitive sites. Notable projects include Chart Street Studios, an RIBA award winning retrofit, and Cambridge Arts Theatre. He trained at University of Liverpool, and later at the CASS, London Metropolitan under tutelage of Peter St John and David Grandorge.
