The large landscape format encloses spreads with a descriptive verse on the left hand page and a colour illustration on the right hand showing each shop. Francis Donkin Bedford (1864-1954) first trained as an architect but gradually turned to painting and illustration work. Elegance and fersh clarity of colour characterizes his work. Edward Verral Lucas (1864-1938) was a successful and prolific writer on travel, art and literature. His guide books of English and European cities were hugely popular, reaching in one case 41 editions.
