Item description from seller

Four-volume Library of America "American Adventures" set featuring William Faulkner (two volumes), William Dean Howells, and John James Audubon a striking cross-section of American literary and naturalist history. Each volume bound in the series’ uniform black cloth with ribbon marker and dust jacket. From the private library of poet and anthropologist Nathaniel Tarn (1928–2024), each volume bears his distinctive ex-libris plate. The Faulkner and Howells volumes date from early LOA printings (Howells copyright 1982), while the Audubon volume collects his Writings and Drawings in full. Several include a Black Oak Books bookmark or insert, attesting to Tarn's Bay Area literary roots. Volumes are crisp, tightly bound, and show only light traces of dust from long storage in Tarn’s bunker. A handsome, scholarly set linking the American imagination from Audubon’s wilderness to Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County with impeccable provenance. Author: William Faulkner, William Dean Howells, John James Audubon Publisher: The Library of America Year: 1980s printings (Howells 1982 copyright) Special attributes: Hardcover with dust jackets and ribbon markers, Tarn ex-libris, Black Oak Books insert Topic: American fiction, literature, natural history Subject: Novels, essays, writings, collected works Keywords: Library of America, Nathaniel Tarn, Faulkner, Howells, Audubon, American literature, modernist fiction, nature writing, Black Oak Books, literary provenance Condition: Near fine overall.
