Item description from seller

Beeton's foundational guide on Victorian middle-class domesticity, the first book to supplant the household culinary authority, Hannah Glasse's Art of Cookery (1747). This copy is from the new and revised edition, 20th thousand. First published in 1861, Beeton's Book of Household Management sold 60,000 copies in its debut year, and two million had been sold by 1868. Despite its author's death four years after publication, the book has been constantly updated and its popularity has lived on to the present day. As well as comprising over 900 pages of recipes, illustrated, for the first time in this genre of book production, with colour plates, Beeton's boldly comprehensive text also contains guidance on home economics and general home life. It was serialized in 24 monthly parts between 1859 and 1861. Octavo (178 x 115 mm). Bound without front ads but with rear ads. Colour frontispiece, 11 colour plates, illustrations in text. Contemporary half calf, marbled sides, endpapers, and edges, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, blind roll to leather. Housed in custom brown cloth box. Wear to marbled sides, inner hinges cracked but holding, faint splash mark to plates, sporadic foxing and pencil annotations to contents. A very good copy. …
